CRP
A gene on chromosome 1q21-q23 that encodes C-reactive protein, which belongs to the pentaxin family. It is involved in host immune defence due to its ability to recognise foreign pathogens and damaged host cells and trigger their elimination by interacting with humoral and cellular effector systems. Plasma CRP is markedly increased during the acute-phase response to tissue injury, infection or other inflammatory stimuli.Segen's Medical Dictionary. © 2012 Farlex, Inc. All rights reserved.
