Herbal medicine
An annual herb that contains alkaloids, fumaric acid, mucilage, resin and tannic acid; it is a mild laxative, diuretic and stimulates the flow of bile, and has been used to treat skin conditions and liver complaints.
 
Toxic effects
Large doses may cause stomach ache and diarrhoea.
