Prototheca

 [pro″to-the´kah]
a genus of ubiquitous yeastlike organisms generally considered as being achloric algae, occurring as spherical to elliptical cells containing thick-walled autospores. P. wickerha´mii and P. zop´fii are the species involved in human and animal infection. See also protothecosis.

Prototheca

A genus of an achlorophyllous alga; two species, Prototheca zopfii and Prototheca wickerhamii, cause protothecosis.
