sapwood

n.
The newly formed outer wood located just inside the vascular cambium of a tree trunk and active in the conduction of water. Sapwood is usually lighter in color than heartwood.

the ring of living XYLEM tissue in a stem or root which has undergone SECONDARY THICKENING, and which is composed of VESSELS and PARENCHYMA cells. Sapwood lies outside the HEARTWOOD but inside the ring of PHLOEM.
