any member of a family of spherical or pleomorphic RNA viruses containing host cell–derived ribonucleoproteins, including viruses that cause lassa fever and lymphocytic choriomeningitis; the natural hosts are rodents.

Any of the family of Arenaviridae of viruses which includes those causing LASSA FEVER and LYMPHOCYTIC CHORIOMENINGITIS. The name derives from the sand-like appearance of the internal granules seen on electron microscopy.
