AREG

A gene on chromosome 4q13-q21 that encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor family, which is an autocrine growth factor and a mitogen for astrocytes, Schwann cells and fibroblasts. AREG interacts with the EGF/TGF-alpha receptor to promote the growth of normal epithelial cells and inhibits certain aggressive carcinoma cell lines.
