arteriole
any of the narrow, thin-walled arteries that carry oxygenated blood to the tissues from the heart, forming part of the BLOOD CIRCULATORY SYSTEM. Arterioles progressively get smaller as they approach the target tissue, giving offside branches which become capillaries. Some arterioles connect up directly to VENULES via SHUNT VESSELS, particularly in tissues with a constant blood supply such as the skin.Collins Dictionary of Biology, 3rd ed. © W. G. Hale, V. A.
