baseline

 [bās´līn]
an observation or value that represents the normal or beginning level of a measurable quality, used for comparison with values representing response to experimental intervention or an environmental stimulus, usually implying that the baseline and reponse values refer to the same individual or system.

Clinical trials
The health state—disease severity, confounding conditions, etc.—present in a person or group of individuals at the beginning of a prospective study.
 
The baseline is time “zero”, before the participants in the study receive an experimental agent or intervention, or negative control; drug safety and efficacy may be determined by monitoring changes in baseline values; variations in distributions of baseline values between groups may introduce bias in the results.
 
Informatics
A measure of cumulative citation frequency across all Derwent Section classes, which shows upward and downward trends in a particular patent family.

Sleep disorders
The normative (i.e., typical) state of a person or of an investigative parameter before an experimental manipulation.
 
Vox populi
A generic term for any basal, null or unstimulated state, often represented as a horizontal line.

1. A line approximating the base of the skull, passing from the infraorbital ridge to the midline of the occiput, intersecting the superior margin of the external auditory meatus; the skull is in the anatomic position when the baseline lies in the horizontal plane.
Synonym(s): orbitomeatal line.
2. Level of performance or aggregate findings before initiation of therapy.
