centrifugation
a process in which particles in suspension are subjected to centrifugal forces by being spun in a CENTRIFUGE, so forming a sediment. Subsequent removal of the SUPERNATANT fluid from the sediment and subjecting it to higher speeds of centrifugation can enable particles of different sizes to be separated out and collected. Eventually the supernatant fluid will contain only soluble materials. In some types of centrifugation, the sample is layered on to a column of liquid (such as sucrose) of increasing concentration down the column, and centrifuged until bands are formed.
