(kon'drō-sar-kō'mă), [MIM*215300]A malignant neoplasm derived from cartilage cells, occurring most frequently in pelvic bones or near the ends of long bones, in middle-aged and older people; most chondrosarcomas arise de novo, but some may develop in a preexisting benign cartilaginous lesion.

chondrosarcoma
A malignant mesenchymal tumour caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of chondroblasts. It is the second most common primary malignancy of bone after osteosarcoma and represents 25% of such lesions.Epidemiology
Arise in the axial and proximal skeleton of adults and older people.
Clinical findings
Often asyptomatic initially; later, pain for months to years, swelling.
Imaging
MRI is the modality of choice; CT, plain films, show destructive, aggressive permeation of diaphysis by tumour.
DiffDx
Metastatic carcinoma, enchondroma, chondromyxoid fibroma.
Types
Clear cell, de-differented, extraskeletal mesenchymal, juxtacortical, mesenchymal, myxoid.
Prognosis
Grade 1, 88% 5-year survival; grade 3, 40% 5-year survival.
