cresol
[kre´sol]a phenol from coal or wood tar; a mixture of isomeric cresol from coal tar or petroleum is used as a disinfectant and in making synthetic resins. Acute poisoning may result in rapid circulatory collapse; chronic poisoning may produce gastrointestinal symptoms, vertigo, skin rashes, jaundice, and uremia.

cre·sol
(krē'sol),A mixture of the three isomeric methyl phenols, o-, m-, and p-cresol, obtained from coal tar. Its properties are similar to those of phenol, but it is less poisonous; used as an antiseptic and disinfectant.
