daunorubicin
[daw″no-roo´bĭ-sin]an antitumor antibiotic of the anthracycline family, produced by a strain of Streptomyces coeruleorubidus and having antimitotic, cytotoxic, and immunosuppressive effects. As the hydrochloride salt it is administered intravenously in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute myelogenous leukemia. As a liposome-encapsulated preparation of the citrate salt, it is administered intravenously in the treatment of advanced Kaposi's sarcoma associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
