The offspring of parents that are each homozygous for different alleles of two genetic loci.

dihybrid
- an organism that carries two different ALLELES of one gene and two different alleles of another gene. For example, character A (controlled by alleles A 1 and A2) and character B (alleles B1 and B2 ). The dihybrid would have the genotype A1A2 B1B2, i.e. a double HETEROZYGOTE.
- (of a cross) having two parents that have been mated to produce dihybrids that are then also mated. A single dihybrid plant is self-fertilized (see SELF-FERTILIZATION). MENDEL formulated his law of INDEPENDENT ASSORTMENT from the results of a dihybrid cross involving pairs of contrasting characters in the pea plant.
