hirudin

A substance secreted by the salivary glands of leeches to prevent blood coagulation so that they can continue to feed on blood. The leeches are, of course, unaware that their hirudin acts by binding directly to thrombin molecules thus preventing them from converting soluble fibrinogen to fibrin. Hirudin has been found capable of preventing restenosis after coronary angioplasty.
