idoxuridine

A drug effective against herpes simplex viruses. Idoxuridine is chemically very similar to thymine, which it replaces in the viral DNA thereby preventing replication. The drug is on the WHO official list. A brand name for a preparation for external use is Herpid.

antiviral agents 

Substances which inhibit the growth of a virus (e.g. herpes) by inhibiting DNA or RNA synthesis. Common agents include aciclovir (acyclovir), idoxuridine, ganciclovir, trifluoridine (trifluorothymidine) and vidarabine. See herpetic keratitis; virus.
