1. any process by which a neutral atom or molecule gains or loses electrons, thus acquiring a net charge, as the dissociation of a substance in solution into ions or ion production by the passage of radioactive particles.

ionization

The state of an atom or group of atoms that has become positively charged by the loss of an orbital electron, or negatively charged by gaining an electron. All body electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium become ionized in solution. Gases may be ionized by means of electrical discharges.
