the quantity of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water 1°C (more precisely from 14.5-15.5°C); it is 1000 times the value of the small calorie; used in measurements of the heat production of chemical reactions, including those involved in biology.

The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a kilogram of water by 1 C. This has been the standard nutritional unit of energy for years, but is now being replaced by the kilojoule. 1 Kcal = 4.187 KJ. See JOULE.
