A condition in which a complete closure of the eyelids over the eyeball is difficult or impossible.

lagophthalmos

The condition in which the eyelids are unable to close, usually because of forward protrusion or enlargement of the eyeball, as in dysthyroid eye disease (Graves' ophthalmopathy) or tumour in the ORBIT. From the Greek lagos , a hare.

Failure of the upper eyelid to close the eye completely. During sleep, about one-third of the population has a slight lagophthalmos. See ectropion; exposure keratopathy.
