L-dopa. A drug used in the treatment of PARKINSON'S DISEASE. Levodopa relieves symptoms in the majority of cases and often effects a remarkable reduction in disability. Brand names of the drug, in combination, respectively, with benserazide and carbidopa, are Madopar and Sinemet.

Levodopa (L-dopa)

A substance used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Levodopa can cross the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain. Once in the brain, it is converted to dopamine and thus can replace the dopamine lost in Parkinson's disease.
