lithotomy
A now abandoned surgical operation for bladder stone. It was originally performed through the floor of the pelvis via an incision along the crease at the inside of the top of the thigh. A successful cut was rewarded by a gush of urine and blood and the appearance of the stone. The more refined modern lithotomy operations have, in turn, now largely been replaced by LITHOTRIPSY.Collins Dictionary of Medicine © Robert M. Youngson 2004, 2005
