(mĕ-lan'ō-jen, mel'ă-nō-jen),
A colorless substance that may be converted into melanin; for example, some patients with widespread metastases of melanoma excrete melanogen in their urine, and melanin is formed when the urine is exposed to air (that is, oxidized) for a few hours.
