melanotic

adjective Black; very dark brown.

Melanotic refers to melanin (which gives pigment to the skin); melaenic refers to melaena (dark, tarry faeces associated with gatrointestinal haemorrhage). When referring to stool, melaenic is the correct adjective; in practice, however, the terms are used interchangeably, with melanotic being increasingly preferred.
