A diffuse network of cells forming the embryonic mesoderm and giving rise to connective tissues, blood and blood vessels, the lymphatic system, and cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system.

The prechordal mesenchyme and the chordamesoderm, the two midline populations of early embryonic mesenchymal cells, which give rise to the extraocular muscles, the notochord, and the ventral floor plate of the neural tube.
