microbicide

Any agent capable of killing MICROBES. The term has, however, recently been applied specifically to any intravaginal, topical gel preparation for use by women to reduce their likelihood of acquiring HIV infection during sexual intercourse with husbands or others. The first candidate microbicide, nonoxynol-9, was shown to damage vaginal epithelial cells and actually encourage infection. Research for a safe and effective microbicide continues and includes the development of agents blocking CD4 binding sites, inhibitors of GP41-medicated fusion, prevention of HIV take up by dendritic cells and conventional pharmacological attack on HIV replication.
