(ōr'thō-pē'diks), Although this is the correct U.S. spelling according to rule and precedent, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has officially adopted the spelling orthopaedics.
The medical specialty concerned with the preservation, restoration, and development of form and function of the musculoskeletal system, extremities, spine, and associated structures by medical, surgical, and physical methods.

The branch of surgery concerned with correction of deformity and restoration of function following injury to, or disease or congenital abnormality of, the skeletal system and its associated ligaments, muscles and tendons. The term derives from the Greek for a ‘straight child’, not ‘straight foot’, as is commonly thought. See also ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON.
