pentosuria

A benign autosomal recessive disease in which more than a gram of a pentose sugar, L-xylulose, is excreted in the urine daily. The disease, which is due to a defect in the enzyme NADP-xylitol dehydrogenase, is largely limited to Ashkenazi Jews. The condition is harmless except that the urine sugar may lead to an incorrect diagnosis of DIABETES.
