The common abbreviated term for polymorphonuclear (many-shaped nucleus) neutrophil leukocyte, the small phagocytic white cell of the immune system present in enormous numbers in the blood and the tissues. Polymorphs are amoeboid and highly motile scavengers of foreign material especially antigen-bearing bacteria and other antigenic material to which antibodies have been bound. See also POLYMORPHIC.
