prolactinoma

 [pro-lak″tĭ-no´mah]
a pituitary adenoma made up of lactotrophs that secretes excessive amounts of prolactin; this may delay puberty in either sex, cause galactorrhea-amenorrhea syndrome in women, or decrease libido and fertility in men. Called also prolactin cell or prolactin-secreting adenoma and lactotrope or lactotroph adenoma.

Endocrinology A pituitary tumor more common in Pts < age 40 characterized by an excess secretion of prolactin–tumor size correlates with the prolactin level; smaller tumors, microprolactinomas, are more common in ♀; macroprolactinomas are more common in ♂ and associated with sexual dysfunction; women may become symptomatic while on OCs; menses may stop when OCs are discontinued; prolactinomas may grow during pregnancy and be diagnosed postdelivery. prolactinoma

A benign tumour of the PITUITARY GLAND that secretes large quantities of the hormone PROLACTIN. The tumour can cause blindness by pressing on the OPTIC CHIASMA and may be suspected because of unexpected milk production (lactation). Treatment is by surgery or by drugs.
