methylglyoxal

(mĕth″ĭl-glī-ŏk′sĭl, -awl)
An aldehyde formed from the metabolic degradation of glucose. Methylglyoxal can bind to proteins and DNA, causing metabolic damage to tissues (e.g., in diabetes mellitus), mutations, or cell death.
