solvolysis
sol·vol·y·sis
(sol-vol'i-sis),1. The reaction of a dissolved salt with the solvent to form an acid and a base; the (partial) reverse of neutralization. If the solvent is water, an amphiprotic solvent, solvolysis is called hydrolysis.
2. The reaction of the solvent with a solute, resulting in the scission of a bond and incorporation of the atoms of the solvent into the product.
