testa

a protective coat around the seed, formed from the INTEGUMENTS of the OVULE. At one area on the testa is the hilum, at one end of which is often found the MICROPYLE. Sometimes the testa is responsible for seed dormancy, a state which is broken when the coat ruptures (see GERMINATION).
