, thioglycollate (thī'ō-glī'kō-lāt),
A salt or ester of thioglycolic acid; frequently used in bacterial media to reduce their oxygen content so as to create favorable conditions for the growth of anaerobes; the thioglycolate will also inactivate any mercurial that might be carried over with the inoculum.
