toxemia

(tok-se'me-a) [ toxi- + -emia]
Distribution throughout the body of poisonous products of bacteria growing in a focal or local site, thus producing generalized symptoms.

Symptoms

The condition is marked by fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and symptoms of shock. In tetanus, the nervous system is esp. affected; in diphtheria, nerves and muscles are affected.
