painful spasm of the vagina due to involuntary contraction of the vaginal musculature, usually severe enough to prevent intercourse; the cause may be organic or psychogenic.

vaginismus

Apparently involuntary rejection, by a woman, of attempted sexual intercourse or gynaecological examination. The legs are straightened, the thighs pressed together and the muscles of the pelvic floor, that surround the vagina, tighten. Sexual desire may appear normal until penetration is tried. Treatment involves full explanation and instruction in the insertion of vaginal dilators of gradually increasing size.

Vaginismus

Muscles around the outer third of the vagina have involuntary spasms in response to attempts at vaginal penetration, not allowing for penetration.
