(mer-brō'min),
The disodium salt of 2,7-dibromo-4-hydroxymercurifluorescein; an organic mercurial antiseptic compound that also has staining properties similar to those of eosin and phloxine, with strong affinity for cytoplasmic structures; also used histochemically to stain protein-bound sulfhydryl and disulfide groups for bright-field and fluorescence microscopy.

Mercurochrome

A proprietary formulation of merbromin, which was once popular as a topical antiseptic. Mercurochrome was deemed ineffective for that purpose and removed from the US market in 1998; it continues to be widely used in other countries.
