a genus of lice. P. pu´bis is the pubic or crab louse, a species that infests human pubic hair and sometimes other hairy areas; see also pediculosis pubis.

Pthirus

(thī'rŭs), Avoid the misspellings Phthirus and Phthirius.
A genus of lice (family Pediculidae) formerly grouped in the genus Pediculus. The main species is Pthirus pubis (formerly Pediculus pubis), the crab or pubic louse, a parasite that infests the pubes and neighboring hairy parts of the body.
