1. A large genus of plants (family Compositae), many species of which contain alkaloids that produce hepatic necrosis.
2. A common weed of the eastern U.S., formerly used in the treatment of amenorrhea and other menstrual irregularities.

Liver degeneration and necrosis caused by ingestion of plants of the genus Senecio, such as ragwort and groundsel; similar hepatotoxic properties have been observed after ingestion of some kinds of Crotalaria and Heliotropium.
