Abortifacient

A drug, herb, chemical or other substance that dilates the cervix and causes the uterus to contract, resulting in spontaneous termination of pregnancy.
Fringe obstetrics A potentially toxic herb—e.g., pennyroyal, black cohosh, blue cohosh, parsley, and tansy, which evoke spontaneous abortion

abortifacient

A drug used to cause ABORTION. Many substances have been reputed to cause abortion and many have been tried in an attempt to procure abortion illegally, mostly without effect. In clinical practice abortion is chiefly induced with one of the PROSTAGLANDINS. Other drugs, such as mifepristone (see ABORTION PILL) and OXYTOCIN, are also used to induce labour.
