the organisms that live on the bed of the sea or a lake, ranging from the high-water mark to the deepest trenches. Benthic organisms are subdivided into littoral (to 40 m deep), sublittoral (41–200 m), bathyal (200–4000 m), abyssal (4001–6000 m) and hadal (>6000 m).
