cytometer
A laboratory instrument for counting cells, especially blood cells. Originally, a glass slide engraved in tiny squares, on which cells had to be counted one by one by human microscopists, the modern version performs the task using lasers, digital electronics and graphics imaging technology. Flow cytometry is a powerful tool in modern medicine. Its applications have expanded from cell counting and sorting, to measurement of cell surface and intracellular antigens, and the analysis of DNA.
