an agent that inhibits replication of viruses, used as the sodium salt in treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis and herpes simplex in immunocompromised patients.

AIDS An antiviral for treating CMV colitis, hepatitis, pneumonia, retinitis; acyclovir resistant HSV, nonresponders to gancyclovir; foscarnet inhibits other herpes viruses and HIV; being studied for treatment of KS Adverse effects Renal damage, meatus rash, which may disappear even if foscarnet is discontinued.
