fumigation

A method formerly used to decontaminate sick rooms after infectious disease, but not now considered of much value. In other contexts, toxic gases, vapours or volatile solids are used to kill bacteria, insect pests or rodents in buildings and food stores. Poisons used include chlorine gas, organophosphorous agents and arsenic and cyanide compounds.
