(gū'bĕr-nak'yū-lŭm),
1. A fibrous cord connecting two structures (for example, the testis and scrotum; the ovary and labium majus). The gubernaculum attaches to the uterus and becomes the ovarian ligament and the round ligament of the uterus.

2. A mesenchymal column of tissue that connects the fetal testis to the developing scrotum; it appears to play a role in guiding testicular descent. The gubernaculum in female embryos attaches to the ovaries and uterus.

Any guiding structure such as the fibrous cord that extends from the fetal testicle in the abdomen down to the scrotum and forms a mould for the canal down which the testicle moves into the scrotum around the time of birth.
