a substance that induces blast transformation; DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis; and proliferation of lymphocytes; e.g., concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin, or lipopolysaccharide.

A substance frequently derived from plants that stimulates mitosis and lymphocyte transformation in an antigen-nonspecific manner; includes not only lectins such as phytohemagglutinins, pokeweed mitogen, and concanavalin A, but also substances from streptococci (associated with streptolysin S) and from strains of α-toxin-producing staphylococci.

1. Any agent that promotes cell nuclear division (MITOSIS). Mitogens are important in genetic research and technology. Pokeweed mitogen, derived from the plant Phytolacca americana , is a powerful mitogen of B LYMPHOCYTES.
2. Any substance that non-specifically causes lymphocytes to proliferate.
