nick
Molecular biologynoun A single-strand break in a double-stranded nucleic acid, usually DNA, at which point either one or more nucleotides are absent or there is a break in the phosphodiester bond between two adjacent nucleotides on one strand of the nucleic acid (DNA) duplex. Nicked sites are characterised by increased mobility.
verb To effect a nick in a double-stranded nucleic acid (usually DNA).

nick
a single-stranded cut or break in a DNA molecule. Nicking of DNA may form part of a DNA repair mechanism, as occurs after damage caused by, for example, ultraviolet light.Collins Dictionary of Biology, 3rd ed. © W. G. Hale, V. A. Saunders, J. P. Margham 2005
nick·el (Ni),
(nik'ĕl), Avoid the misspelling nickle.A metallic bioelement, atomic no. 28, atomic wt. 58.6934, closely resembling cobalt and often associated with it. Protects ribosome structure against heat denaturation. A deficiency of nickel causes changes in the ultrastructure of the liver. It is a cofactor in various henzymes (for example, urease).

nickel
A metallic element (atomic number 28; atomic weight 58.69) that has been linked to deficiency states in some plants and animals. In some biological systems, nickel protects against heat-induced ribosomal damage; its role in humans is uncertain, but in excess it is toxic.Ref range
