exophthalmos

 [ek″sof-thal´mos]
abnormal protrusion of the eye. adj., adj exophthal´mic. It results in a marked stare and is usually due to hyperthyroidism. Occasionally the condition is caused by an infection of the eye or a tumor behind the eye.
