Any of several genera of paramyxoviruses that are similar to the viruses that cause influenza and are associated with various respiratory infections, especially in children.

An infection with a parainfluenza virus. This is usually no more than a common cold, but sometimes parainfluenza viruses cause serious illnesses featuring CROUP and PNEUMONIA.
