[pro″to-the-ko´sis]an infection caused by organisms of the genus Prototheca, especially P. wickerhamii or P. zopfii, varying from cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions to systemic invasion involving several internal organs, which may occur as an opportunistic infection or as a result of traumatic implantation of the pathogen into the tissues.
