1. any of the embryonic epithelial cells developed about the neural tube; they later become transformed, some into neuroglial and some into ependymal cells.

A neuroepithelial, filiform ependymal cell extending across the entire thickness of the wall of the brain or spinal cord, that is, from the internal to the external limiting membrane; spongioblasts become neuroglial and ependymal cells.
