symphysiotome

An instrument used in symphysiotomy, the sectioning of the symphysis pubis to increase the pelvic diameter for vaginal delivery of a baby. Symphysiotomy is no longer a justified procedure, given that an infant can be more safely delivered by cesarean section than by delivering vaginally following surgery of the pelvis; as such, symphysiotome is no longer used in the working medical practice.
